Founded in 2008, Kettős Mérce (In English: Double Standard) evolved from a blog opposing the strengthening of the Far Right into one of the most influential and popular left-leaning community media outlet. Currently it is publishing 2+ original pieces a day from its 20+ regular contributors and 90+ community members to its 120 000 social media followers in Hungary and beyond.

As a member of Political Critique, Kettős Mérce also publishes some of its pieces in English, together with partner organizations from Poland (Krytyka Polityczna), Slovakia (Inštitút ľudských práv), the Czech Republik (A2) and other partner organisations from the region.

Apart from publishing its own analyses and commentaries on important domestic and international news, Kettős Mérce puts priority on following ongoing demonstrations and grassroots social and political initiatives. Furthermore, it often functions as an activist community which organizes or contributes to the organization of such events and movements.

In cooperation with Közélet Iskolája (School of Public Life) Kettős Mérce publishes its most important articles in a free monthly distributed especially among people belonging to disadvantaged groups, who otherwise would not have access to independent news sources of any kind.

The main areas of interest and points of focus for Kettős Mérce are: real-time reactions to mainstream political events; the diverse instances of social insecurity and inequality; the respect for, and extension of, social rights; active citizenship; homelessness; gender issues, minority issues, education and health. Global topics also come into the spotlight. Articles cover current affairs, but Kettős Mérce is also playing a role of agenda-setter, bringing into public discussion issues marginalized by mainstream media. Kettős Mérce is proud of its polyphonic and pluralistic character, however the majority of the analyses and policy-proposals published can be subsumed under the diverse umbrella of the New Left.
